Driving in conditions of extreme heat can play havoc on vehicle drive components. Discover some important tips for driving in hot summer months.

As the ambient temperature increases during summer months, the propensity for severe engine failure increases significantly. This article looks at methods to help reduce the affects of hot ambient temperatures on a vehicle’s engine as well as tips on what to do when stranded in hot weather.

Vehicle Preparation for the Summer Months

During the hot summer months, it’s important that the engine’s cooling system functions properly. There are certain checks that can be performed to help the cooling system function for peak engine performance. Some of the cooling system checks include:

  • check engine coolant (antifreeze) strength
  • check radiator coolant level
  • look for leaks around the radiator, a/c condenser, coolers and hoses
  • check the cooling fan for proper operation
  • change coolant according to at owner’s manual time and mileage requirements
  • check tires for proper air inflation

Purchasing a test strip kit at the local auto parts store is a good method for checking coolant strength. Simply dip a test strip directly into the coolant and match the color change to the instructions provided with the kit. If the test strip indicates weak coolant strength, the coolant should be changed. Always check coolant strength when the engine is cold to help prevent skin burns.

Checking the radiator coolant level is much easier in newer vehicles by simply looking at the level on the see-through plastic coolant tank. Most of these systems are under pressure so great care should be taken when adding coolant. At the same time the level is checked, look for leaks and ensure the cooling fan is functioning properly.

Checking the radiator coolant level on older vehicles, that do not have plastic coolant tanks, may require the radiator cap to be removed and visually look into the radiator to determine the level. Removing the radiator cap should also be done when the engine is cold to prevent injury.

Preparation for Hot Weather Vehicle Break Down

Besides preparing a vehicle for hot weather, the car owner should make preparations in case of a vehicle break down in hot weather. According to the Center for Disease Control, excessive heat exposure caused 8,015 deaths between 1979-2003 in the United States. If the driver and/or passengers become stranded in hot weather, certain precautions should be taken to help avoid excessive heat exposure.

Many of the preparations that should be undertaken when stranded in hot weather are simple, common sense precautions. Plenty of water, sun screen and cool loose clothing are some the items that should be on hand in case of a break down. A damp cool rag applied to the back of the neck can also help to prevent heat stroke.
